The primary goal of our parish school is to provide a learning environment that fosters growth in Catholic Christian identity and academic excellence. The school does not discriminate against students in admissions policy or in participation in any school program or activity on the basis of race, ethnic origin, gender, or handicaps unrelated to the student’s abilities.
Children of parish members and children of other Catholic parishes not having their own schools receive first consideration for admission. Children of other religious traditions may be admitted when space is available, but only if parents agree to the participation of their children in the integrated religious education program that is a natural part of the whole curriculum.
A child may enter kindergarten if he will reach age 5 by December 1st of the school year. For admission to the first grade a child must reach age 6 by December 1st and have successfully completed an approved kindergarten program. It is important to emphasize that tuition alone does not cover the cost of educating a student in the school. Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish contributes a substantial subsidy to each student to help offset the cost of their education. Accordingly, families are expected to demonstrate active participation in the parish and provide financial support. To qualify for in-parish tuition, a family must be registered at the parish and must participate in weekly attendance at mass and in parish activities and fundraising. Weekly attendance and participation will be measured by a families use of their offeratory envelopes, which are distributed to each household registered in the parish. Siblings of current students are always given first priority for admission.
To be eligible for admission at the beginning of the school year, the registration application should be submitted by the preceding February 1st. Applicants accepted for admission will be notified in April. Students who were not recommended for promotion by their previous school will not be accepted into the next grade level. Students requiring special support services will be considered on an individual basis and must be able to participate in normal classroom environments. Status will be reviewed annually by the principal.
The parish school reserves the right to deny admission to any student whose needs we are not able to meet or whose parents are motivated by concerns that are inconsistent with the goals of the school and the policies of the Archdiocese of Detroit.
